Overview :
Companies today are undergoing a significant transformation to a more global Anywhere Enterprise. Unified communications (UC) is a crucial component in this evolution and organizations look to collaborate better with an extended enterprise (see Exhibit 1 on the next page). UC has the power to help companies lower the overall cost of communications, bring worker productivity to new levels, enhance corporate green initiatives and completely redefine the way we work by becoming part of our application infrastructure. However, the deployment of UC is not without its challenges. Too often, organizations go down the path of deploying new technology with old technology principles in mind and UC is no different. Many of the early adopter deployments of VoIP and UC were designed exactly the same as the old systems, severely limiting the overall value of UC, which is a highly flexible, IP-based solution.
