Overview :
Social networks, blogs, and Twitter might be getting all the press these days, but email remains the most important communications channel for business. Email even surpasses the telephone in frequency of use, according to a 2009 study by Osterman Research. Email is popular throughout the healthcare industry, among providers, insurers, and others. The industry's slow but steady transition from paper-based records to electronic medical records (EMR) promises to only increase the importance of email and other forms of online communication. When health records and customer account records are electronic, it makes sense to transfer them by email or a file transfer protocol such as FTP, rather than U.S. mail or fax, as long as such transmissions are properly secured.
