Senator Bill Frist, MD, Launches Preeminent Podcast on Innovation, Leadership to Address the Critical State of the Healthcare Industry

Through engagement and education, “A Second Opinion” aims to play a meaningful role in improving health and healthcare in communities across America at the intersection of policy, medicine, and innovation

NASHVILLE, Tenn.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Transplant surgeon, former US Senate Majority Leader and healthcare entrepreneur Bill Frist, MD, today launches the inaugural season of his new podcast: “A Second Opinion: Rethinking American Health with Senator Bill Frist, MD.”

Amidst the unprecedented change that the healthcare landscape is currently experiencing, a time when our nation and the industry is redefining the delivery of healthcare and the definition of health, “A Second Opinion” brings a distinct set of perspectives from policy, business and medicine to the forefront. Through the exchange of ideas, perspectives and insightful conversations with healthcare’s most influential leaders and rising innovators, “A Second Opinion” will help shape the industry’s collective focus on fundamental issues.

“In America, we don’t always do health and healthcare well. We have the best and brightest physicians, and we lead the world in pioneering treatments and cures, yet our health outcomes still lag behind other developed nations,” said Senator Bill Frist, MD. “In ‘A Second Opinion,’ we explore why we only get part of the equation right and hear from the smartest minds on what we can do to improve our healthcare system during a period of extreme fragmentation.”

With 45 years of experience in medicine, policy, and business, Senator Frist provides unparalleled insider access to the most influential and effective leaders in healthcare. From building an organ transplant program to leading the U.S. Senate to investing in companies that are poised to address healthcare’s most critical challenges, Senator Frist gets to the heart of healthcare’s most critical issues with the best and brightest minds in the industry. Looking far beyond the point of care, Senator Frist explores diverse drivers of health — care access, nutrition, employment, social determinants of health, costs, and more. Together with guests, he considers what the future of healthcare looks like and previews some of the innovative companies making a difference today and tomorrow. They explore the emerging models of healthcare delivery and reimbursement, the role of education in health and how to better empower individuals to advocate for their own well-being.

“I’ve spent my life working to further health as a currency for peace, wellness and hope. With ‘A Second Opinion,’ I hope to share that message with an even broader audience, encouraging more Americans to become engaged in bettering their own health, educate themselves around critical issues and eventually support the health of their communities in bigger ways,” Senator Frist said. “I want to inspire the next entrepreneur, inventor, or doctor to take on the challenge of improving our nation’s healthcare system.”

Discussion segments span four critical content areas: innovation, policy, technology and leadership. Conversations will delve into the depths of expert minds to learn what keeps them up at night and where they see the future of healthcare innovation headed. They will also unpack health policy, get inside the minds of health tech stars on the rise and those making real change in the subsector and explore real issues facing the industry and the management and leadership skills it takes to tackle them.

While guests on “A Second Opinion” are from across the nation, Nashville as the podcast’s “home base” helps to shape what’s unique to the show. Nashville represents America’s heartland and is nationally recognized as the country’s capital of healthcare delivery. While the coasts are known for tech innovation, finance and drug development, Nashville is the birthplace of the healthcare services industry and national capital for healthcare delivery. Given the changes in healthcare, now is the time to share the sophistication that Nashville brings to the table: practical knowledge, well-earned know-how and scalable delivery solutions.

He is actively engaged in the business as well as the medical, humanitarian, and philanthropic communities.

As a U.S. Senator representing Tennessee from 1994 -2006 (the first practicing physician elected to the Senate since 1928), Dr. Frist served on both the Health (HELP) and the Finance Committees responsible for writing all health legislation. He was elected Majority Leader of the Senate, having served fewer total years in Congress than any person chosen to lead that body in history. His leadership was instrumental in the passage of the 2003 Medicare Modernization Act that established the Medicare prescription drug benefit, and the historic PEPFAR legislation that provided life-saving treatment globally to 20 million people and reversed the spread of HIV/AIDS worldwide.

As a leading authority on healthcare, Senator Frist speaks nationally on health reform, government policy, global health, education reform, and volunteerism. He is the Co-Chair of the Health Project at the Bipartisan Policy Center, and co-founder of Aspire Health, the nation’s largest non-hospice community-based palliative care company. His board service includes the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, The Nature Conservancy, and three publicly-traded companies: AECOM, Select Medical, and Teladoc Health. Senator Frist is one of only two individuals to rank in the top ten of each of the five inaugural Modern Healthcare Magazine annual surveys of the most influential people in healthcare in the United States.
